Springfield Firewear® fabrics provide significant comfort advantages to competitive electric arc resistant fabrics. Our blend of mod acrylic and cotton offer good value and protection. An inherently flame resistant fabric blended from cotton and a fiber designed to smother flames when exposed to fire. The FFR™ Fiber is designed to emit a noncombustible gas through microscopic pores in the fiber when the fiber is exposed to a flame. This gas smothers the flames much like a fire extinguisher. FIREWEAR® fabrics are blended with cotton and thus have many of the natural benefits of cotton; breathability, high-moisture regain, and lightweight comfort.

Here's how inherent FFR® Fiber (Fibrous Flame Retardant Fiber) Works:

It's not just a surface phenomenon, but from deep within the fiber itself. As can be seen in the scanning electron photomicrographs, before the FFR® Fibers are exposed to heat and flames, they look and feel just like any other textile fiber. When exposed to a flame source, the reaction begins. Upon exposures to flames, certain molecular components of the fiber emit noncombustible gasreleased through tiny pores in the fiber which smothers the fire much the same way that a fire extinguisher does. These gasses shut off the oxygen feeding the flames, thereby stopping further burning. Yet you don't even know the FFR® Fibers are there until you need them! The lameresistance performance of the FFR® Fiber is so effective that it can be blended with untreated combed cotton to produce inherently flameresistant fabrics. And because no additional chemical treatment to the fabric is required since the FR is part of the fiber itselfthe combed cottoncomfort, bright colors, durability and ease of care are retained.
